Short answer: the best extender for an eero or Orbi network is another unit of the same system. It joins the mesh and you manage it in the same app. A plug-in extender from another brand can’t do either.
- eero: any current eero works with any other eero, so add the one that fits. The eero 7 suits most homes, the eero Pro 7 adds 6 GHz and faster ports, and the eero Outdoor 7 covers the yard.
- Orbi: buy the add-on satellite from your system’s own series: the RBE770 for an Orbi 770, the RBE970 for an Orbi 970. Other series need their own satellite.
Can you mix mesh brands? explains why brands, and Orbi series, don’t mix.
If you have eero
eero says all its models work together. Once one eero is connected to your modem as the gateway, any combination of eeros can extend the network. eero also says that mixing its Wi-Fi 7 models with older eeros may reduce performance across the network, and it recommends using Wi-Fi 7 eeros together. So if your system is already Wi-Fi 7, add a Wi-Fi 7 eero. If it’s older, a Wi-Fi 7 eero still joins, but you get the most from it once the rest of the network is upgraded.
eero 7. Dual-band Wi-Fi 7 with two 2.5 GbE ports and up to 2,000 sq ft of coverage, by eero’s figure. eero lists it as usable as a gateway or as an extender. For most homes adding a node, this is the one to buy.
eero Pro 7. Tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with 6 GHz and two 5 GbE ports, and it too can be the main router or an extra node. Choose it if your network already uses Wi-Fi 7 eeros with 6 GHz, or if you’ll connect the new node with an Ethernet cable and want the faster ports.
eero Outdoor 7. eero’s model for outdoor use. eero lists it with an IP66 rating, powered over its 2.5 GbE port by PoE+ (802.3at), and able to link to another eero up to 1,000 ft away. Use it for a patio, yard, barn or detached garage; Wi-Fi to an outbuilding covers the alternatives.
If you have Orbi
Orbi is stricter. In NETGEAR’s compatibility table, each Orbi Wi-Fi 7 router works only with satellites from its own series. NETGEAR also says a satellite missing from its tables isn’t compatible with any listed router. Some older Wi-Fi 6 combinations work only in extender mode, which NETGEAR says decreases performance. Check your Orbi router’s model number before you buy.
RBE770, for an Orbi 770 system. A tri-band Wi-Fi 7 satellite with two 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports. It links back over Wi-Fi with MLO, or over a 2.5 Gbps cable. NETGEAR says it adds up to 2,750 sq ft and requires an Orbi 770 Series system.
RBE970, for an Orbi 970 system. A quad-band Wi-Fi 7 satellite with a band reserved for the link back to the router. It has one 10 Gbps and two 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports, and can link back over a 10 Gbps cable.
For any other Orbi series, NETGEAR’s table lists the matching satellite for each router: RBE260 for the RBE261, RBE360 for the RBE361, RBE370 for the RBE371 and RBE870 for the RBE871.
How they compare

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Works with | Any eero network | Any eero network | Any eero network | Orbi 770 router only | Orbi 970 router only |
| Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi 7, dual-band | Wi-Fi 7, tri-band | Wi-Fi 7, dual-band | Wi-Fi 7, tri-band (BE11000) | Wi-Fi 7, quad-band (BE27000) |
| Wired ports | Two 2.5 GbE | Two 5 GbE | One 2.5 GbE (PoE+ power) | Two 2.5 Gbps | One 10 Gbps, two 2.5 Gbps |

Specifications come from eero’s and NETGEAR’s own pages. Where a maker’s pages give two different coverage figures for the same model, we leave coverage out. As of the FCC’s notice of 9 September 2026, eero’s routers held a Conditional Approval to 31 October 2027, and NETGEAR’s Orbi mesh series to 1 October 2027. See the FCC router rule explained.
Why not a cheaper plug-in extender?
Where to put the new unit
Place it about halfway between your router (or the nearest unit) and the weak area, not in the dead zone itself. If you can run an Ethernet cable to the new unit, a wired link back is more reliable than Wi-Fi; NETGEAR lists a wired backhaul option for both Orbi satellites. How many mesh nodes do you need covers placement, and mesh backhaul explained why a wired link helps. If you’re starting from scratch rather than adding to a system, see the best mesh Wi-Fi systems.
